Directions & future – my Swedish progress!

God morgon!

I’m back here with a new update post about my progress with the beautiful Swedish language. I’m still as excited as I was in the beginning, even though this last lesson was really hard. But as I’ve already stated, it changed nothing about my excitement, so let’s move “deeper” into this lesson!

It began with application of the definite and indefinite articles I learnt about in the last lesson in practice. It is…difficult, since the articles are joint to the back of the word and it always makes me think that it’s the plural. But I think I kinda figured it out and now I’m doing quite good. Then I learnt about the object pronouns and those are really easy, but to learn all the fixed prepositions….oh Lord. Prepositions have always been a problem for me in every language but I always managed to somehow find some kind of logic in there. However in Swedish….it doesn’t make any sense. Wait on (for) you, live by (with) me and come until (to) us are just a few examples of how it looks like. The next paragraph was about adverbs of place. And let me tell you…that was the moment I began to regret taking up this language. I mean…why would they have so many adverbs for place and especially for direction? I kinda suck in this. Nevermind. No one notices anything if you speak fast enough, haha! Then I learnt how to express the future, some more pronouns and adverbs (is this even possible?), and how to create compound words and compound sentences. And then I finally got to the directions and places, basically what was this lesson supposed to be about. The vocabulary and everything was interesting, I have to admit, but the grammar…I know that I had to have this at some point but they didn’t have to put so many important stuff into one lesson, I felt like my head is about to explode the entire time.

Nevermind, it’s time to stop complaining and finally have a look at the progress, I’m so happy about it!

Det är tisdag förmiddag och jag är hemma. Den är tio över nio. Nu jag ska laga frukost och plugga svenska. Klockan tolv jag ska äta lunch och börja med mitt jobb. På eftermiddagen jag ska idrotta, titta på teve och gå till centrum. Nu jag ska prata om min väg från centrum till mitt hus. Först du måste gå rakt fram och när du ser Lidl, du måste svänga till vänster. Sedan går du långt rakt fram till du ser Tesco. Sen måste du svänga till höger och fortsätta upp till Juhoslovan. Sedan du svänger till vänster och sen första gatan till vänster och du är där. Det är allt. Ikväll, jag ska plugga höllandska och lyssna på musik. Klockan nio jag ska duscha och tvätta mitt hår och klockan elva jag ska gå till sängs.

• Hur kommer man till apoteket?

Du måste svänga till vänster, sen till höger och fortsätta långt rakt fram. Då ser du apoteket till vänster. På apoteket kan man köpa medicin.

• Hur kommer man till banken?

Du måste svänga till vänster, sen till höger och fortsätta fram till du ser torget. Sedan svänga du till vänster och då ser du banken till höger.

• Hur kommer man till kaféet?

Du måste svänga till höger, sen till vänster och fortsätta rakt fram. Sedan när du står på torget, du svänga till höger på Storgatan. Då ser du kaféet till vänster. På kaféet kan man dricka kaffe eller fika.

• Hur kommer man till teatern?

Först du måste svänga till vänster och sen till höger. Du måste fortsätta långt rakt fram. När är du på torget, du kan se teatern på Storgatan. På teatern kan man titta på en film.

• Hur kommer man till universitetet?

Du måste svänga till höger och fortsätta rakt fram. På universitetet kan man plugga svenska.

• Hur kommer man till pressbyrån?

Du måste svänga till höger, sen till vänster och fortsätta långt rakt fram. Då ser du pressbyrån till höger. På pressbyrån kan man köpa en tidning.

• Hur kommer man till hotellet?

Du måste svänga till vänster, sen till höger och fortsätta rakt fram till torget. Sedan ser du ett hotell till höger och ett hotell till vänster. På hotellet kan man sova.

• Hur kommer man till parken?

Du måste svänga till vänster, sen till höger och sedan fortsätta långt rakr fram. Sedan ser du parken till höger. På parken kan man ta en promenera.

• Hur kommer man till skolan?

Du måste svänga till höger, sen till vänster och sen till höger på Skolgatan. Då ser du skolan till vänster.

It’s Tuesday morning and I’m at home. It’s 9:10am. Now I’m going to prepare breakfast and study Swedish. At 12 o’clock I’ll have lunch and begin working. In the afternoon I will do sports, watch TV and go to the city centre. Now I’m going to talk about my way from the centrum to my house. First you have to go straight and when you see Lidl, you have to turn left. Then you go straight ahead for a long time until you see Tesco. Then you have to turn right and continue up to Juhoslovan. Then you turn left and on the first street to the left again and you’re there. That’s all. Tonight I’m going to study Dutch and listen to music. At 9pm I will take a shower and wash my hair and at 11pm I will go to the bed.

• How to get to the chemist’s?

You have to turn left, then to the right and continue long straight ahead. Then you see the chemist’s on the left. At the chemist’s one can buy medicine.

• How to get to the bank?

You have to turn left, then to the right and continue until you see the square. Then you turn left and you see the bank on the right.

• How to get to the café?

You have to turn right, then to the left and continue straight ahead. Then when you stand on the square, you turn right on the Main Street and you see te café on the left. At the café one can drink coffee or have a snack.

• How to get to the theatre?

First you have to turn left and then to the right. You have to go long ahead. When you are on the square, you can see the theatre on the Main Street. At the theatre one can watch a movie.

• How to get to the university?

You have to turn right and continue straight ahead. At the university one can study Swedish.

• How to get to the tobbaconist’s?

You have to turn right, then left and continue long straight ahead. Then you see the tobbaconist’s on the right. At the tobbaconist’s one can buy newspaper.

• How to get to the hotel?

You have to turn left, then to the right and continue straight ahead to the square. Then you see one hotel on the right and one hotel on the left. At the hotel one can sleep.

• How to get to the park?

You have to turn left, then to the right and then continue long straight ahead. Then you see the park on the right. At the park one can take a walk.

• How to get to the school?

You have to turn right, then to the left and then to the right on the School Street. Then you see the school on the left.

Okay, so what do you say? Has my Swedish improved? I think it did, look at the lenght of this text, already a couple of paragraphs instead of one! I’m aware of the fact that it’s a really simple Swedish and my grammar is probably not the best, but still, it’s something, and I feel very positive about it all. Today I’m gonna continue further and start the lesson number 5, which is supposed to be about restaurants, meals and numbers. Well needless to say, I’m very excited how it’s gonna turn out and I’m already planning what am I gonna share with you in the next article!
